Spring Valley High School took on the Bonanza Bengals on August 25th, and the Grizzlies showed up and showed out by defeating the Bengals with a score of 37-6, retaining the banner for another year.
In the first half, the Grizzlies were struggling out the gate, committing penalties that helped the Bengals generate some offense but not enough to put Spring Valley out of reach of the game.
“We had the first game jitters, a lot of penalties, a lot more than what I expected,” said Head Coach Marcus Teal. “But towards the second half we put it all together and we were able to pull away.”
Going into the second half the Grizzlies played amazing plays, opening the floodgates of scoring on the Bengals and just flat out destroyed them with the help of their Senior star running-back Tipisone Manu.
Manu looks to be just as dominant in their next game as he is preparing to play with the same level of commitment.
“I plan on playing with the same intensity from this past game, and not just only the next game, but for the rest of the season,” Manu said.
The offense didn’t just showout in the second half, but the defense was able to make great plays to get the offense back on the field. Linebacker Dillion Banks was one of the players that stood out on defense. Recording a forced fumble that led the Grizzlies to get the ball back on defense.
The Grizzlies did their job and brought home the banner, but they still have flaws to fix before they play a tougher opponent of the Perry Pumas in Gilbert, Arizona.
”Lack of discipline as far as when to block a guy and when not to block him…” Teal said, “So that’s something we definitely need to work on before we take off to Arizona.”
