With the start of high school sports nearing, student athletes are more than eager to bring their talents back to the field. At the beginning of this pandemic, all sports came to a sudden stop, and all student athletes were left with a whole lot of questions that are just now being answered.
The Grizzly Growler conducted a survey for Spring Valley seniors to further identify how student athletes feel about the current season structure. From the survey, it’s clear that students are unhappy with the season being as short as it is. Whoever is in charge of making this decision is trying their best to do what’s right for the community, but fellow student athletes have had plenty of opportunities taken away from them due to this pandemic.
We should be developing more opportunities for our athletes to actually proceed with what they want to do in life, whatever it is. Some things that stand out from the survey were that 61.5% of students said they would get a COVID-19 vaccine in order to play a full season, and 79.5% students said that they would consider playing another sport rather than their main sport to get more out of their senior year.
With the class of 2020 having their senior year abruptly cut short, they were stripped of opportunities that some are still trying to gain back. All the kids want to do is play their sport, so they can go onto the next level. With the season being shortened, the time to capitalize on opportunities isn’t the same as it was in the past. By giving student athletes a somewhat longer season, everyone would be more content, and people would be more able to make it to the next level.
