During the month of December, Spring Valley partakes in a school-wide event called Community of Caring. Students, teachers and parents donate money and gift cards to less fortunate students at Spring Valley High School. Every year there are students who need extra help to make the holiday season a little brighter. Mrs. Melanie Wilkerson, mentor coordinator and Spanish teacher said, “Last year we helped fifty to seventy families (with cash donations and gift cards). This year we hope to reach about three thousand dollars to help our families in need.”
Principal Mr. Robert Gerye said, “The community of caring started in 2004 when Spring Valley opened. During the past years, this project has been very successful.”
Junior Breawna Brooks said, “Last year I donated five dollars to the project, and I felt really good about it. I know that my money went to a good cause.”
Mrs. Melanie Wilkerson said, “During the year we raise a lot of money, but this year
Junior Tysheena Jackson said, “I honestly didn’t even know about this project until now. I’m definitely going to donate some money.”
There are a couple ways that students and even parents can contribute to the project. One of the ways that SVHS collects money is going to students at lunch and asking them to donate, and also during mentor class. Also parents and students can donate gift cards and or money. Not all of the students at our school have funds for the holidays. Together we can make an enjoyable community of caring.
