What will you remember the most from 2012?
The re-election of President Barack Obama?
Canadian pop stars finding success south of the border, with one that wasn’t sure if she wanted to be called (maybe), and the other that told listeners what he would do if he was their boyfriend? A British singer setting fire to rain?
What about the Korean horse dance known as “Gangnam Style”?
United States dominating in the Olympics (as usual)? Lebron James FINALLY winning a NBA championship?
Maybe even the release of Call of Duty Black Ops 2?
In pop culture, Justin Bieber had two major singles, with Boyfriend and As Long You Love Me. Adele’s Set Fire to the Rain reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, making that the third song from the 21 album to do so.
Billboard Top 100 singles of 2012 include “We Are Young” by fun., “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen and “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together” by Taylor Swift. As of right now, “Diamonds” by Rihanna is sitting at the top of the charts.
The dance that swept, not just the nation but the world came from Seoul, South Korea in the Gangnam District.
Korean pop star Psy and his dance that involves pretending to ride a horse, and swinging a lasso, “Gangnam Style,” it is the most downloaded song on iTunes. It also has gained more than 800 million views on Youtube, making it the sites most watched video. So, one thing that will stick with high school students the most from this year is three words:
OPPA GANGNAM STYLE!
In film, “The Avengers” grossed the most this year worldwide, with more than $1.5 billion, according to Box Office Mojo. The second was “The Dark Knight Rises,” grossing over one billion, according to Box Office Mojo. The Twilight series came to a close with the final movie “Breaking Dawn Part Two” being released in early November. The fourth installment of the Paranormal Activity series was released (and filmed in Henderson, Nevada).
The projected 2013 OSCAR winning movies, are “Argo,” “Silver Linings Playbook,” and “Lincoln,” according to awardcircuit.com.
In October 2012, Call of Duty Black Ops 2 took students out of schools (and in some cases, boys, away from their girlfriends) in order to play the war game, which is set in 2025.
On the topic of sports, the Alabama Crimson Tide won another NCAA Football national championship (and headed to another), Kentucky Wildcats mens’ basketball team won the national title with their first round pick starting line-up, and the New York Giants won Super Bowl 46 over the New England Patriots. Speaking of Giants, the San Francisco Giants won the World Series as well. The Miami Heat finally won a NBA championship, giving Lebron James his first championship ring (let the Michael Jordan comparisons begin).
The U.S. dominated in the 2012 Olympic games hosted in London, with winning 104 medals total, with 46 gold, and two sets of 29 silver and bronze medals.
In the Olympics this year, American Swimmer Michael Phelps became the most decorated Olympic athlete ever.
In other words, U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!
Oh yeah, the National Hockey Players Association is still on strike.
In politics, President Barack Obama was re-elected defeating Governor Mitt Romney. Also, ObamaCare had passed in a five to nine vote in the Supreme Court.
All and all, 2012 is suppose to be the end of the world, according to the Mayan calender. This such events as Hurricane Issac and Superstorm Sandy, some believe it, some don’t.
