LVMUN is the Las Vegas Model United Nations held at Spring Valley High. Model United Nations is the educational debate teaching students about contemporary issues about diplomacy, international issues and relations. Students in Global Politics and Diplomacy went to the conference and prepared while students from other schools in Las Vegas came to debate and discuss.
“Well it was nice talking about how different delegates have different problems including refugees, which was my topic. Seeing some focus on all different factors to the same issues like war, quality of life, opportunities, and unfair laws.” Said senior Rowan Espiritu.
Students were divided into different committees to discuss the issues they were assigned. Then from there, they had to find a solution that all delegates had agreed on. Delegates were assigned countries to argue for even if they didn’t agree with the policy.
“I really liked how we got to meet other students from different schools and it was just a really nice friendly environment where we got to share ideas. The food was super good too.” Said senior Jack Petrick.
Many important and recent events were discussed at LVMUN including issues of war, democracy, human rights, and so much more just as important and affecting the globe. MUN gives the opportunity for students to discuss issues and create solutions for these issues, bringing new perspectives.
“I was able to get my ideas across by just saying what I thought, but also preparing what I would say beforehand with sticky notes.” Said Junior Matthrew Flores.
The main objective of MUN is to find solutions to global issues, with which they must have the support and aid of other delegates. Delegates must prepare speeches and solutions that would gather the support of others aligned country policies of other delegates. MUN has helped others become better at public speaking and practicing the use of a louder voice.
At the end of debate, all committees reunite to distribute awards for how well they spoke and well researched they were. Awards were great motivators for delegates as many aim win an award for their hard work.
“I really wanted an award cause it’s like I know I did a good job. It showed that I was able to accomplish something huge and stand out against everyone” Said senior Cal Christian.
With LVMUN concluded, students are allowed to bask in their glory and awards. The next LVMUN conference won’t happen until next February giving students time to enjoy their awards and hard work and prepare for the next opportunity to win more awards.
