Spring Valley High School’s Varsity football team played their annual Homecoming game on October 20th, losing with a score of 20-21 against Clark High School.
Varsity kept the lead throughout the majority of the game, scoring in the first 15 minutes and earning an added field goal point after every touchdown.
“In my mind, we won,” said senior Antwon Lock (WR). “We played the best we could and that is what counts.”
Varsity led only a one-point lead amongst the second half of the fourth quarter, and with just 22 seconds short of victory, Clark obtained possession of the ball and kicked a field goal worth a score of two points.
“It was definitely unexpected,” said senior Tipisone Manu (RB). “We were all pretty bummed about the loss in just barely half a minute, but me and the guys played solid throughout the game.”
Going into the game, Varsity Head Coach Marcus Teal desired the Homecoming win, yet his main focus was to ensure the players played their best out of the entire season.
“We had a rough couple games throughout the season,” Teal said. “I wanted the boys to give everything they had [and] to show how they progressed. I am really proud of them.”
Students packed the stands with pink attire to showcase support for Breast Cancer Awareness, showing extra spirit with pink face paint, jewelry, and wigs. At half time, a variety of SVHS’s clubs and sports teams held a parade to build up excitement for the Homecoming dance the following day. Homecoming court candidates were also recognized.
“The half-time parade and celebration was pretty cool,” said junior Valentina Luna. “Everyone was so hyped, and I really feel like the school was a big community.”
A celebration of Varsity’s seniors also took place before the big game. An hour before kickoff, seniors walked the field with loved ones in honor of their dedication and time spent to the sport throughout their high school career.
“I’m very blessed to say I am where I am today because of my family,” Manu said. “Seeing them celebrate my last home game of my high school life with me was everything. I think everyone felt emotional too.”
“Despite us losing, having our families behind our backs was worth everything more.” Manu said.
