This year’s homecoming theme will be “Into the Den”, which piqued interest at Spring Valley High School, thanks to its intentional inclusivity. The dance will be on October 21, 2023, following the football game against Clark High School and the homecoming assembly.
Homecoming is a dance held in the United States as a tradition in high school and college, as it builds and fosters school spirit and pride amongst the community. Dances like this give an opportunity for students to intermingle and network to build connectivity within all grades.
At this year’s homecoming which will be hosted at SV, from 6pm to 8pm, there will be catering, music, and activities, more specific details will be revealed closer to the date. The ticket prices will remain at $25, mirroring last year’s cost, yet will be purchased digitally through Ticket Spicket and will run out quickly.
A student must arrive at the door with their student ID and with no large backpacks or bags, or will not be allowed inside. The entry to the dance will close 30 minutes before the dace ends, at 7:30pm.
This theme was oriented around the movie and musical of Into the Woods, including fairy tales, such as Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel, and Cinderella. This was constructed by SV’s Student Council, due to the theme previously being seemingly directed towards the upperclassmen. The thought behind this theme was to incorporate more freshmen, extending a warm welcome to them into “The Den”. A lot of the freshmen are a part of this planning committee, in charge of preparing and assembling.
There will be an assembly held on October 20th, to recognize the excitement and theme surrounding the dance, as it will also recognize the last year’s Track and Field 4×100 meter relay race for winning the 4A State Championship. As well as specially recognizing other sports and athletes for their achievements.
There will be a homecoming court this year, which is where there are individuals voted by the students, but only juniors and seniors are eligible for the nomination. It will be around 12 people and SV students are able to nominate any upperclassman you would like or know to be considered. This is a gender neutral court with the intention of inclusivity.
Due to the theme being surrounded by nature, there are more decor opportunities as the theme is diverse, an abundance of outfits can be correlated, even unintentionally.
“Hoco gives me a chance to fully express myself,” said Student Council Public Relations and Historian Jaelina Richardson, “To my attire, my hairstyle, down to being in the dance circle. It allows me to be free since I’m a very social person. ”
The homecoming football game against Clark High School on the 20th, is a Pink Out game, where all families and students wear anything pink to bring awareness to Breast Cancer, as the entire month of October is dedicated to this cause.
“I feel very confident in our homecoming game,” said Varsity Football Quarterback Ezekiel Olie. “The Breast Cancer Awareness theme is something we participated in back home in Hawaii, it will always be something heavy to play for.”
