On August 3rd of 2023, ‘Heartstopper’ season two was released. ‘Heartstopper’ is a 2022 English LGBTQ+ high school drama series written and directed by See-saw films. The show is based on the Heartstopper comic series by Alice Oseman.
‘Heartstopper’ season two is a heartwarming and captivating continuation of the story of Nick (Kit Connor) and Charlie (Joe Locke). It explores their growing relationship, the challenges they face, and the importance of acceptance and self-discovery. It’s a must-watch for fans of the series.
Season two of ‘Heartstopper’ continues to explore themes of friendship and self discovery, it starts to dive deeper. This season introduces viewers into a deeper view in Nick and Charlie’s relationship and more of the characters’ struggles.
In ‘Heartstopper’ season one, viewers meet Nick and Charlie, two high school students who become unlikely friends. As their friendship grows, they navigate their feelings and discover their identities. It’s a sweet and relatable story about love, and self-acceptance.
Most characters in this season, of course, knew that Nick and Charlie were in a relationship, but they automatically assumed that Nick was gay, while in reality he is bi-sexual.
Topics like these are things that viewers have expressed that they can relate to. Topics from self discovery, eating disorders and navigating relationships are important topics that the actors perform beautifully.
The casting of ‘Heartstopper,’ is most definitely one of its strongest points. Joe Locke stars as Charlie, an angsty but well rounded teen. At just 18, Locke makes a believable highschool student compared to actors that are in their late 20’s who are typically cast today.
Kit Connor is surprisingly compelling in his role as Nick Nelson. His mentality was not only believable, but also realistic and likable. Instead of a twisted loner, ‘Heartstopper’ portrays Connor as a complex teen who is still figuring out life every day.
It’s rare in T.V. Today, to find such a realistic portrayal of teenagers, and even though some wish that the episodes never end because of how good the show is, it doesn’t take away from the fact that ‘Heartstopper’ is a beautiful narrative that was beautifully executed.
One major focus during this season is Nick struggling with making his sexuality clear to his friends and the whole world. We see this in season one, when Nick was initially figuring out his sexuality, and Charlie was finding a way to make people come to terms with the fact that he is gay.
‘Heartstopper’ is a show that touches on difficult topics, and because of that, watching the show feels like it doesn’t need what other teenage shows have like drugs and alcohol. Not including these subjects helps to realize that a lot of teenager shows don’t really focus on being a teenager.
The response this season, and the show has gotten has been overall positive and heartwarming. The series brings Oseman’s comics to life in the best way possible. This show finds a way to be bold in a great way.
