After viewers waited over a year due to COVID, season four of On My Block was finally released. However, is the new season good enough to binge? Is it worth it to spend so much time and snacks on it? The short answer is, yes!

The comedy-drama series first premiered on Netflix, March  2018. The creators Lauren Lungerich, Eddie Gonzalez and Jermy Haftintroduced viewers with five high school students Moose Finnie (Sierra Capri), Jamal Turner (Brett Gray), Cesar Diaz (Diego Tinoco), and Ruby Martinez (Jason Genao). These teenagers all faced a common issue,their rough Los Angeles neighborhood, Freeridge. All kinds of troubles occur in Freeridge considering it’s a poor old neighborhood that was corrupted with gangs and drugs. In those streets, two gangs dominate the area the most, the Santos and the Prophets. They constantly fight over territory around the neighborhood and to show who could control it all. During that time, Jamal heard about the Roller World Money with the help of Abuelita (Peggy Blow). This was money that Lil Ricky (Cesar Garcia), the founder of the Santos gang, stole and hid for years; he left clues in a treasure hunt style for people to find. The group of friends decide to officially set on an exciting adventure after Caesar’s brother Oscar, mostly known as Spooky (Julio Macias), wanted him to join the Santos as family tradition. Some of the seasons were a little strung on, but it was very interesting when it came to the end. 

Fast forward to season four, we are introduced to how the friends have completely lost connection with each other after two years. Monse left to go stay at a private boarding school and made new friends, Ruby is now in an intense relationship with Jasmin (Jessica Maire Garcia), who was his love stricken stalker for the past three seasons, Jamal is now on the football team and shows everyone a popular version of himself that isn’t the real dorky him, meanwhile, Cesar became the new leader of the Santos. This gives viewers a more realistic view of what it’s like to be in high school and how friendships don’t always last forever. 

On the other hand, some of the acting wasn’t the best when it came to Cesar because he changed his voice to seem more tough and intimidating, but in reality it just sounded like a really bad sore throat; however, it did show the change in character as he was now leader of a gang and needs to show a bad boy look. The makeup was also bad when it came to flashbacks of Spooky having a shaved head. The bald cap they used made the actor’s head shape very weird and not smooth like an actual head. It wasn’t pleasing to the eye, but it did give out a few good laughs when the actor was being serious but his head was in the shape of a football. 

With many ups and downs, the group finally lands back together. The hard part about watching this season was (spoiler alert) Oscar getting killed when he finally got out of the gang life and had a family and Abuelita dying from cancer at the very end of the season. These two losses ultimately strengthened the group and brought them emotionally together to where they graduated and celebrated their fortunes. 

The storyline to the ending of On My Block gave heartfelt moments and provided viewers with peace knowing that the show ended on a positive note. It was a rollercoaster of events watching these teens grow from freshmans to seniors, showing an elaborate plot to where their next adventure might land them.
