ADHD is known as attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder which affects numerous people from adolescents to adults across the world, and the month of October is dedicated to spreading education and accurate information on the topic.

What is ADHD?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder that causes people to have trouble focusing, paying attention, or having “uncontrollable impulsive behaviors”. According to Single Care, an estimated 6.1 million children have ADHD in the United States.
ADHD is more commonly diagnosed in males as compared to females; It is usually diagnosed in childhood, yet sometimes later in life for women due to the symptoms presented differently, as well as the shortfall of research on it.

October is known for the awareness of ADHD. There are common misconceptions about hyperactivity disorder, such that it is ‘because of lack of discipline’, that this month pursues to clear up and correctly inform.

The awareness campaigns for this month are commonly composed of video series, webinars, and different events within communities. It is promoted to take the time to research and understand ADHD and who it may affect.

Education comes in many forms…

The Attention Deficit Disorder Association, CHADD, the CDC, and so many other organizational websites provide accurate reports on ADHD. Watching medically researched videos, reading articles with statistics on suggested websites, or even having a thoughtful conversation with a peer is a way to accomplish the encouraging message of this month.

Let’s hold up our orange ribbons and acknowledge everyone around us as October comes to an end.
