Thursday, January 26th, the Grizzlies took on the Trojans of Pahrump Valley becoming triumphant with a team score of 51-21. Two wrestlers pinned their opponents in amazing times. Rodrigo Santos pinned his opponent in 14 seconds, CJ Rochester pinned his challenger in 22 seconds. Teven Mayo, Jordan Conner, Dan Vantassel, Ray Waters and Devin Dishari also won by pins in their matches.
Ikenna Obilor although not wrestling at his best, lasted through each of the three periods. He fought hard to stay off his back to avoid a disappointing pin. Instead, he lost with a score of 10-4 going to decision.
Next match will be on Wednesday, February 1st, facing off against Western High School.
With the regional tournament quickly approaching in mid February, the wrestler’s are raising their conditioning to wrestle with the best of the best. The entire team’s goal is to place in the top three at the regional tournament to compete with wrestlers from the entire state of Nevada. Richard Tapia said, ” I hope that I will have a chance to make it that far.”
Spring Valley duals were hosted on Saturday December 10th. The weigh-ins began at 9am and the tournament ended by 7:30pm. Our Grizzlies completely swept the meet beating every team by at least 30 points.
Several varsity wrestlers went completely undefeated throughout the course of the duals. These wrestlers are Enzo Perez 113, Teven Mayo 132, Jordan Conner 138, Danny Van Tassel 145, Raymond Waters 171, Dominic True 195, and Silvano Villanueva 286. Richard Tapia said, “One match wasn’t my best work, but I am going to improve on that.”
In the finals, our Grizzlies battled against the Liberty High School Patriots. Scoring was going back and forth between the two teams until Spring Valley kept scoring consecutively as we took the lead and ran with it. The dual ended with the score of 48-29. Rodrigo Santos said, “It’s fun to pump the crowd up by winning big matches.”
