Many creative minds roam the halls of Spring Valley without having many outlets to share their creativity. Creative writing teacher Jenna Tullis has found a way for her students to express themselves and share it with the school.
“It’s our first year of doing it,” Tullis said, “It’s really just going to be almost like a portfolio of a combination of the class’s best work throughout the school year.”
Creative writing students will be the main contributors to the magazine with their stories and poems. Tullis hopes to host an event or competition for other students to submit and publish a piece of work they are proud of.
“We are hoping to do almost a competition or application process where we’re going to open it up to the rest of the school,” Tullis said. “[Students will] be able to submit a piece of their work to be featured in the very beginning of the Lit Mag.”
This will be different from the Grizzly Growler, which covers the news around the school because it will look into the minds of students from a creative angle. Students will see stories and poems that their peers have written that typically wouldn’t be featured in the newspaper.
“Students really get to express themselves through their writing,” Tullis said. “The newspaper seems to cover the current news on campus, and the Lit Mag is going to be primarily students’ work.”
Spring Valley had a literary magazine a couple of years ago that Tullis didn’t know about, and she was encouraged by coworkers to revive it. She hopes for the magazine to be released toward the end of April or beginning of May, so it will be out for the last month of the school year. There is a desire to have this continue on for the following years.
“I’m hoping it will be a tradition that it will start and be successful,” Tullis said. “That it is something we can continue to build on and get better at.”
Creative writing will pair with the art program to include visuals within the magazine. As of this moment, photography will collect their students’ best work to be included.
“The rest of the school can see the kind of work we do,” Tullis said. “Students can be proud that their work has been published. It’s just a way to get creative writing out there.”
