Both Spring Valley High School bowling teams are champions. They’re ready to start their upcoming season. The men’s bowling team are two time state champions. They went to nationals over the summer and got 11th out of 48 and ranked 11th in the nation. The women’s team has made the regional/state championships multiple years in a row. The school can’t wait to see what the team has in store for us this year.
The bowling team didn’t know if they’ve have a team or not, so they had to change everything up.
“Change our attitudes and change how we think of each other,” Bryson Mortensen said.
Last year, both boys and girls were undefeated in their division and boys won state. The bowling team are going to try their best to hold up the strong record for the program and develop a good team dynamic after losing two top players.
“Last year winning the state bowling championship was amazing… we accomplished such a big goal and I knew that if it wasn’t for the team and the coaches, we wouldn’t have gotten there,” Mortensen said.
“Since my Freshman year, we went from a playoff team, to two time State Champions. It had so much to do with the team dynamic,” Zach Billot said.
Coach Martin encourages the team to do better. He gives them a tip before and after each game by saying “lets get spares, spares will help us win” or sometimes he would compliment their shots when they do well, such as strikes and spares.
“In a way my coach has inspired me to do better, so I could bowl on varsity and become better. I feel like if my coach didn’t inspire me, I would have quit bowling,” Fung said.
Head coach, Kyle Martin, has been the coach of the bowling team for many years now and has many good experiences with both of his well decorated bowling squads.
“I’m also excited to see the improving JV bowlers over the years and I can’t wait to see our boys team to pick up where they left off last season since we lost a few bowlers,”Coach Martin said. “The team has definitely grown as a team but individual we’ve seen growth and seeing them turn into leaders.”
