Besides the Strip, something that attracts the attention of Las Vegas highschoolers is a university about a mile from the casinos and the tourists.  That university is formally known as the University of Nevada- Las Vegas or UNLV for short.

UNLV is known as a tier two school, with the most popular majors being business, management, marking and related support service (18 percent), hospitality administration/management (17 percent) and psychology (eight percent), according to the US News and World Report. The university also offers programs in education, homeland security and journalism.

The William S. Boyd School of Law, which is the only law school in Nevada,  is ranked as the 76 best law school in the U.S., according to the report. The UNLV School of Dental Medicine is the only dental school in the state of Nevada.

UNLV currently has 22,138 undergraduates, with 54.8 percent of the student body being female and 45.2 percent being male. At UNLV, four percent of the student body lives on campus, while 96 percent of the student body lives off campus and commutes to school, according to the report.

The fall 2013 application is now open to students. The application fee is 60 dollars.

As for admission, a student must have a 3.0 weighted GPA in the 13 following credits: English (four), mathematics (three), social science (three) and natural science (three), according to the UNLV website.

The deadline for the fall 2013 application is July 1, 2013.
